After a backlash following Wendy's announcement last week that it was installing electronic menuboards so it could charge customers more for certain items during peak hours, the company not very successfully tried to undo the damage.
That is our Mouse Print* story this week.
If you were attracted by "high" bank deposit interest rates around 3-percent on a high-yield savings account starting a couple of years ago, don't assume they have raised YOUR rate when those accounts went up to four- and five-percent. The WSJ reports some banks, particularly online ones (but not exclusively), get new depositors by advertising a good rate, but then do not continue to raise the rate for those new depositors. MrConsumer has banked at Salem Five in the Boston area for almost 30 years, and their customer service manager has voluntarily raised the rate I am getting automatically. Now that's great service!
This week is NCPW when consumer agencies around the country reveal complaint statistics for the past year and try to educate the public on ways to protect themselves as consumers. Here is the 2023 Consumer Sentinel report with the top complaints filed in 2023. You can go deeper into the report for statistics in your state. Learn more about your consumer rights every day this week and attend free webinars on particular subjects.
Consumer Alert
Pittsburgh TV station WPXI is alerting viewers that very realistic U.S. Treasury checks are being sent some people and appear to be IRS refunds. The checks are apparently fake. Dates on the check are not current and the amounts do not match any refund that you are currently owed. Do NOT try to cash them.
