The New York Times tells the story of two men who fell for sophisticated financial scams [alternate link] that drained each of them of about a million dollars. In some cases, despite pleas from family members to wake up and recognize the cons, the men persisted. Both romance and money-making elements were part of these scams. As one victim - a doctor - told MrConsumer years ago when asked why he fell for the lies, he said "you want to believe."
